Interpreting in Medical Settings:
A Practical Body of Coursework for Interpreter Professional Development
Introduction:
Sign Language Interpreters, Transliterators and Deaf Interpreters, as professionals, maintain their professional
certification with continuing education units (CEUs). Interpreters who work in the legal setting can obtain
advanced specialty certification, called the Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC: L).
People want to participate more in their own healthcare. For this to work, communication and therefore,
understanding, needs to improve between healthcare provider and/or healthcare institution and the Deaf/Hard
of Hearing (D/HOH) client. To this end, we have developed a series of educational course modules, to better
equip interpreters with the skills needed to meaningfully and accurately facilitate communication in the
healthcare arena.
Additionally, we provide consultation and training services to healthcare facilities, providers and respective
staff interpreters to improve communication access. In this way, they can better serve a culturally rich, yet
underserved population.
Our Approach:
Our courses are tailored to fit interpreter needs according to skill level. We work with:
- Interpreter Training Programs (ITPs)
- Freelance interpreters of all skill levels
- Video Relay and Remote Interpreters
- Hospital contracted and/or staff interpreters who work in emergency/critical care settings.
We collaborate with healthcare and interpreting professionals to provide an exciting, informative as well as
highly useful workshop! These courses are designed to meet high continuing professional education standards.
We encourage discussion toward developing advanced specialty certification for interpreters who work in
the medical field.
